Biophilia

Biophilia (meaning love of life or living things) is more of a design philosophy than a style. The term is used to describe the human contentment achieved through an innate connection to nature. In turbulent times, wellbeing is recognised as being paramount and our link to the natural environment more essential than ever, not just to survive, but thrive.

There are numerous steps we can take to live in more meaningful, holistic ways in our everyday urban life. In practice, any aspect of re-establishing links with nature to create healthy environments for life and work.

Plants, an abundance of natural light, native materials like leather, marble, wood and wool, calming ‘earth’ tones, patterns reflecting the natural world in the artwork, wallpaper and cushion covers are all aspects of biophilic design in interiors.

Key Elements of Biophilic Design include:

  • Flora and fauna - enhancing spaces with carefully selected vegetation to create a natural aesthetic and aid air purification;

  • Natural effects - embracing natural patterns, textures, colours and materials, evoking nature, to bring the outdoors in;

  • Light - integrating natural light to deliver more vibrant and luminous interiors in tune with day and night cycles;

  • Air - improving ventilation for a healthier home with well-designed airflow;

  • Space - creating spaces that offer both a sense of perspective of outside and a cocooning refuge inside.

A leading expert in biophilic design, Oliver Heath, stated that “in essence, biophilic design helps reduce stress and recharge energy. In the end, it’s a matter of quality of life. It’s obvious that it can’t be good to work in a small space that’s poorly lit and disconnected from the outside.”

It’s also been said by Sally Coulthard that “Biophilia is the simple core truth that humans need a connection with nature to be content.”

While Albert Einstein wisely noted “Everything you can imagine, nature has already created.”
